A Modern Day Quest for the Letters of Transit December 12, 2019

Pawns of the Wall is a thriller/who done it/love story hybrid set in Patagonia, AZ near the US-Mexico border. An unlikely love triangle develops when circumstances bring together Harper, a newly arrived physician disillusioned with the New England medical establishment, seeking self discovery as a clinic volunteer, Dylan, an enigmatic, idealistic security consultant intent on protecting America, and Mary, a compassionate nurse/medical activist committed to care of the indigent in her community. Their story is told amidst the backdrop of immigration, border security towers, family separations, and ICE. Pawns of the Wall mirrors current headlines, as if the author were prescient about unfolding border events, yet there are classic elements of a Casablanca type narrative, refuting the notion that the problems of 3 little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.

The main characters are well developed and nuanced; readers will care about them and their fate. Secondary characters like Nance, the cafe owner and former CIA operative, and Trish, the bartender have been carefully crafted and contribute memorable appearances. This is a story well told and well researched; I learned about security tower construction, immigrant holding centers, and the flora/fauna unique to southern Arizona. The best fiction creates a believable reality, one in which the reader is invested, entertained, and educated- Pawns of the Wall delivers.

Gripping story, characters with depth December 3, 2019

Deception, by Derrik Woodbury, is one of the best thrillers I’ve read in a long time. The plot was original, the characters well-developed and three-dimensional, and the dialogue believable. Something I appreciated was that, although it’s largely a political novel/thriller, the author in no way wore his politics on his sleeve. I enjoyed it thoroughly, had a hard time putting it down, and was sorry when I finished it! Not that...Read More

Hanging on to see how they handle it. November 29, 2019

I have a 40 year medical background. I enjoyed all the challenges the good guys faced but most especially the OR scenes. That was quite the save!

Quid pro quo November 28, 2019

Changes to peoples’ circumstances and their unpredictability happen in this book. There are various political manipulations included in the plot. Casino games are described in detailed fashion. Sometimes the writing is protracted and might fit in better as a movie. Sexual problems from a medical and psychiatric prospective are included in a fascinating discussion. Yet endless characters, numerous details and sudden scene changes...Read More

Didn't like the way it ended November 27, 2019

Great write. Awesome read... But didn't like the way it ended.
Seemed like a part of the story just wasn't there.
Hate cliffhangers....

A Rare Political / Medical Thriller That I Could Not Put Down November 26, 2019

I am not a big fan of political based fiction but the way that politics, medicine and deception are interwoven makes for a very compelling plot. Lots of unexpected twists and turns held my attention and I hope that you give it a read so you can enjoy it as well.

Good Reading November 18, 2019

Well written with multiple but interrelated plot lines. Along with good character developmet. I particularly liked the explanations of medical terminology that enhance the plot development.
